Bag and compact filters may both be candidates for an air handling unit. Identical face dimensions do not make them automatically interchangeable. Selection must address the filtration requirement, housing geometry and available fan capacity together.
Define the required filtration level first
Confirm the requested ISO 16890 classification for general ventilation and the scope of the supporting report. Pocket count or a V-shaped arrangement is not evidence of class. If a legacy F7 label appears in the existing specification, compare measured classifications and relevant documents rather than repeating that label alone.
Measure usable installation space
Check pocket length and the space needed to avoid contact with surrounding components during operation. For a compact element, verify frame depth, installation orientation and removal clearance. A filter that passes through the access door may still have the wrong seating interface.
Compare performance at the same airflow
Assess initial pressure drop at the same airflow per element. Review the fan operating point and permissible system resistance. A low clean-filter resistance or large media area alone does not guarantee service life or total energy cost. Operating conditions and resistance development over time also affect the decision.
Include maintenance access in the decision
Consider access, handling, packaging volume and the existing retention arrangement. Confirm compatibility between retainers and the proposed frame in writing or on a drawing. Retain the reason for accepting one configuration and rejecting another. Future replacement reviews then have an engineering basis rather than a remembered preference.
Field example
Example: Two candidates share a face size, but the bag filter needs rear clearance and the compact filter needs different retainers. A unit-price comparison misses those differences. Include installation changes, service access and data at the same airflow in the decision file.
Practical checklist
- Required class and relevant report
- Depth, free space and service access
- Pressure drop at comparable airflow
- Frame, gasket and retainer compatibility
