Both routes can deliver the same catalogue item. The difference appears when something is not standard: a changed size, a question about the media, a document request or a complaint that needs a production record behind it.
Standard repeat items: the routes are closest here
For a catalogue prefilter bought in quantity on a fixed interval, a stock holder nearby may deliver faster and in smaller batches. Where the specification does not move and no document beyond a packing list is needed, the practical difference is mostly availability and price. Judge this case on stock depth and delivery reliability.
Non-standard requests: where the routes separate
A changed dimension, a different frame, a seal variant or an unusual operating condition all require someone who can decide what is producible. A distributor passes that question along; its answer depends on a third party's schedule. Asking the manufacturer of the element directly removes one step from every technical decision and from every revision.
Traceability: ask what can be reconstructed afterwards
If a batch behaves unexpectedly, the useful question is what record exists behind it. Ask which identifier links a delivered element to a production run, who holds that record and how long it is kept. A distributor can usually trace its own delivery; tracing back to the production run depends on what the producing plant records and shares.
Decide by request type, not by principle
Many plants use both routes deliberately: a local stock holder for routine prefilter replacements, and direct contact with the producer for custom sizes, labelled products and documented batches. Write down which of your items belongs in which group, and review that list when a specification changes.
Field example
Example: A site orders standard panel filters from a nearby stock holder every quarter and buys its custom terminal HEPA elements directly from the producer. Splitting the two keeps short lead times for routine items without losing the technical route for the elements that need drawing approval.
